L‘abbaye fut fondée en 817 par Pépin d’Aquitaine pour recevoir le Chef de St-Jean Baptiste. Plusieurs fois pillée et ravagée par les Vikings au IXe siècle, par les Anglais pendant la guerre de Cent Ans puis par les protestants pendant les guerres de Religion, l’abbaye fut reconstruite aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Elle présente l’ensemble des bâtiments où vivaient les moines bénédictins : salle des hôtes, salon de l’abbé, réfectoire, cellules...

The abbey was founded in 817 by Pépin d’Aquitaine to receive the head of St John the Baptist. Several times destroyed by the Vikings in the 9th century, by the English during the war between the French and the English, and finally by the protestants during the war of Religion. The abbey was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. You can still see today the building where the monks lived: reception room, Abbot’s drawing room, refectory, monk’s cells.... Today, the abbey houses the municipal school of music, the library and the Centre of European Culture.

L’abbaye abrite aujourd’hui le Centre de Culture Européenne, la bibliothèque et l’école de musique municipales.

VISITE GUIDÉE : du 1er juillet à mi-septembre tous les jours à 11 h, 15 h, 16 h et 17 h. Pour les groupes, toute l’année sur rendez-vous.
