| Aux
confins du Poitou et de la Saintonge, sur le chemin de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle,
l’Église Saint-Pierre, Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO,
est un véritable chef-d’œuvre de l’Art
Roman Poitevin du XIIe siècle. Dans un état
de conservation exceptionnel, elle domine un ensemble de pierres
tombales curieuses et la croix Hosannière du XIVe siècle.

| On
the border between the poitou and saintonge regions, on Santiago
Compostela road, the church of Saint Peter, dating from the
12th century, is a true masterpiece of Poitevin Romanesque
art. The church, is very well preserved, towers over a ground
of strange tombstones and the Hosannière Cross of the
15th century. The west facing central doorway which was formerly
surmounted by an equestrian statue of Constantin is a perfect
illustration of the theme of “Sermon Saintongeais“.(The
Saintonge Sermon) The jewel of church is the South doorway,
which is remarkable for its four archivolts with a bestiary,
figures of the Apocalypse, the Apostles and the Prophets.
The east-facing chevet (exterior apse-end of the church) is
covered in highly attractive, sculpted and often symbolic
figures (La Scala Salutis). |

A
la façade ouest, le portail central, jadis surmonté
de la statue équestre de “Constantin”,
illustre magnifiquement le “Sermon Sainton-geais”
: calendrier des mois et travaux des champs, Vierges folles
et Vierges sages, Vices et Vertues, anges adorant l’agneau.
Le portail sud, joyau de l’église, est remarquable
par ses quatre voussures ornées du Bestiaire, des
Vieillards de l’Apocalypse, les Apôtres et les
Prophètes. Le chevet orienté, foisonne de
modillons sculptés forts attrayants ou parfois très
symboliques (Scala Salutis).
